When your face begins to show signs of aging especially around your lower face and neck, you may begin your search to find ways to refresh and rejuvenate your appearance. A Facelift or Rhytidectomy surgery is an out-patient procedure that addresses the visible signs of aging caused by loss of volume/fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, genetics and stress. Other reasons women and men consider a facelift are:
- Loose skin or excess neck fat/“turkey neck”
- Developing jowls and loss of youthful contour around jawline
- Deep lines or folds around the nose or corners of mouth
- Appearance that your face has fallen/relaxed causing sagging
- Loosening of the neck muscles causing banding
Facelift surgery softens and improves the contours of your face leaving you with a natural more youthful appearance. Often times, patients opt to add procedures such as eyelid surgery or fat transfer with their facelift surgery to achieve a complete facial rejuvenation at one time.

There are different types of facelift procedures available depending on what you are hoping to achieve. Upon exam and listening to your concerns, Dr. Champion will customize which procedure will help you achieve your desired goal.
Full Facelift or Deep Plane Facelift
This procedure is often the most utilized technique as it addresses not only the loose skin but also the underlying muscle or superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). After the appropriate, well-hidden incisions starting at the temples are made, re-shaping and tightening of the SMAS along with re-draping of the skin results in a beautiful long-lasting youthful appearance.
This procedure is appropriate for patients with less visible signs of aging and are looking for a less invasive approach with less scarring.
Lower Face/Neck Lift
This procedure typically addresses the jowls, loose, wrinkly neck skin and fat under the chin or the “turkey neck”. The incisions begin in front of the ears and around the back of the ear typically ending at the hairline.
While this procedure pushes back the hands of time, it does not stop it. Dr. Champion recommends using skincare and sunscreen as well as Botox and fillers to lengthen and enhance your results. Dr. Champion and her team can help create a skincare routine just for you so you can get the most out of your surgery.

You may experience some minimal bruising and swelling which will subside over a couple of weeks.
There is very little pain with minimal need for pain medication. Every patient’s healing time is different depending on what procedures were done, but on average, it may take around 2 weeks to feel back to normal with most patients returning to work at around 10-14 days if not sooner. If you have an important event such as a wedding to attend, Dr. Champion recommends giving yourself 2-3 months after surgery to be looking your best and photo ready.
