Breast Augmentation Procedure

Many women consider a Breast Augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, at some point in their lives if they feel that their breasts have not developed to be as full as they had hoped or that they are not proportionate to their body. It is a widely popular procedure that is safe and effective and can be life changing for many women.

Breast augmentation will increase the size of a woman’s breasts, but also offers several additional benefits, including:

  • Increases fullness in the upper and lower pole of the breasts
  • Adds projection to the breasts
  • Brings proportion to the body
  • Replaces breasts that are lost because of cancer or injury

While a breast augmentation will undoubtedly refine breast size, it will not improve droopiness or sagging. If after extreme weight loss, nursing post-pregnancy or breast cancer has left you with reduced volume and excess skin, Dr. Champion may recommend a breast lift along with your breast augmentation to achieve your desired result. Keep in mind that you may be able to achieve a nice result by simply reshaping and redistributing your breast tissue without utilizing a breast implant.

Dr. Champion is a breast specialist and performs her highly sought out procedure through
inconspicuous incisions located in the inframammary fold or in the lower half of the areola. The inframammary incision is located under the breast in the crease making it in-detectible whereas the periareolar incision is located along the lower line of the areola camouflaging the incision.

Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome based on the type of breast implant you select, degree of enlargement you desire and your anatomy. There are different types of implants that Dr. Champion may recommend to enhance your breast size and will go over each of them with you at your consultation. She will help guide your decision based on your personal preferences as well as other factors such as:

  • Your desired breast enlargement size
  • The width of your chest
  • Your height and weight
  • The elasticity and thickness of your skin

Contrary to much speculation, breast implants do not impair breast health. Careful review of scientific research conducted by independent groups such as the Institute of Medicine has found no proven link between breast implants and breast cancer, autoimmune or other systemic diseases.

Saline implants are synthetic shells that are filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants are offered in several different types of shapes, firmness levels and feel differentiations. An advantage of a saline breast implant is that if the implant shell leaks, a saline implant will collapse, and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 18 years of age and older. Saline may be used in younger women in the cases of breast reconstruction.

Other than the traditional saline implant, we also offer the Ideal Implant. While this is a saline implant, it is unique in that it is structured with next-generation technology offering the benefits of the look and feel of a silicone implant but with the peace of mind of a saline implant.

Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue which is why more patients tend to choose this implant. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. This may or may not be noticeable to the patient. Therefore, an ultrasound or MRI is recommended in the years following the procedure to check for breast implant leak or rupture.

Highly cohesive or “Gummy Bear” implants are silicone implants filled with a more form-stable cohesive gel and feel slightly firmer. Because this is more “solid” implant, the benefit of this gummy bear implant is that there is less to no chance of the gel leaking out of the shell should it become compromised.

Silicone implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 22 years of age and older. Breast implants can be placed in one of two locations: sub-muscular placement (under the pectoral muscle) or sub-mammary/sub-glandular placement (behind the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle).

Who is a Candidate for a Breast Augmentation

Women who desire to enhance the size and shape of their breasts and who do not have excessive sagging are good candidates for a breast augmentation. The ideal candidate is also healthy with no underlying medical conditions, a non-smoker and has realistic expectations.

Recovery

While recovery depends on the individual, like any surgery, breast augmentation recovery requires rest following the procedure. Most patients may return to work, depending on their occupation, within a few days after surgery. Post-Op instructions will be provided as well as follow up appointments with types of activities to avoid in the weeks following your breast augmentation. Your results are immediately visible although there may be minimal to no bruising or swelling, and incision lines will fade over time.

Of course, breast implants and your body will age over the course of your lifetime. Pregnancy, weight loss and menopause may influence the appearance of your augmented breasts. For these reasons, you may need to replace your breast implants years after your initial breast augmentation procedure. In the meantime, you can expect to have long-lasting results that will allow you more choices in clothing and greater comfort when unclothed. If you are like many women who have breast augmentation, you may also have a boost in self-confidence.

Dr. Champion and her highly knowledgeable team will help guide you through your recovery by being available to answer questions regarding your breast augmentation procedure that may arise. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Dr. Champion’s patients are extremely satisfied with their new image and fulfillment of their goal for fuller breasts.
