Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal surgery is an out-patient procedure designed to remove the breast
implant with or without the capsule. Removing or explanting breast implants has been in the news lately due to complications often thought to be caused by breast implants. While that is one reason some women are opting to remove their breast implants, more common reasons, while still a rare complication, may be due to the following:

  • Capsule, or scar tissue thickening
  • Experiencing pain and discomfort
  • A distorted appearance
  • Implant rupture
  • Lifestyle changes

Who is a Candidate for Breast Implant Removal

Anyone who has breast implants and does not wish to have them anymore is a candidate for breast implant removal. In some cases, if your implants are leaking or ruptured, Dr. Champion may recommend removing some or all of the capsule via En Bloc technique if possible, in order to clean out all of the leaked silicone. If you feel you are experiencing a complication, imaging from a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI may help detect a rupture.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with a breast implant removal surgery. Dr. Champion and her team will guide you through weighing the benefits against the risks as well as the emotions you may experience from breast implant removal surgery. Risks will be explained in detail to ensure that expectations are clear and understood. Some possible risks to keep in mind are:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Fluid collection
  • Asymmetry
  • Scarring
  • The possibility of needing revisional surgery
  • Unhappy with appearance

Recovery

Dr. Champion will go over what you can expect during your recovery such as when you can shower or how long you will need to wear your support bra. Healing can take several weeks as swelling will continue to minimize over time. Final results can take up to a year and will vary for each patient depending on skin and tissue quality. If you have had your breast implants for an extended period of time, Dr. Champion may recommend adding a mastopexy (breast lift) or adding fat if possible in order to achieve the most optimal results. Continue to follow Dr. Champion’s instructions and come to your follow-up appointments.
